Too Poor, Not Newsworthy

I meant to post a link to Barbara Ehrenreich’s piece in last Sunday’s New York Times about recession-related stories that completely ignore the tales of the already poor. In “Too Poor to Make the News,” the author of 2001’s “Nickel and Dimed” tracks down some of her sources to find out how they are faring in the Great Recession. In a nutshell she discovers that mostly, people aren’t noticing a big difference.  From the article:

“We were poor,” Ms. Smith told me cheerfully, “and we’re still poor.”

Ehrenreich talks about the issue, and her article, in a recent NPR interview here.
